About Copper Agates

There are hundreds of different types of agates across the Earth, many agates being formed right now and won’t be able to be discovered for tens of thousands of years from now. The Lake Superior area alone has many variations of agates – the Lake Superior Agate being the most dominant and one of the oldest agates in the world that most rock collectors can recognize. The copper replacement agate though, is a different breed. Copper agates are a very younger type of agate which has never been carried by glacial activity. While the host basalt where Lake Superior Agates were born in is long gone and eroded away, these copper agates are still embedded in their birth rock and need to be chipped or broken out, or be discovered though sawing large slabs of upper peninsula basalt.
